The Big Story

Good day  ,

Like water drops in the fountain, people across the world have continued to pour tributes on Kobe Bryant and Professor Clayton Christensen, two great personalities whose deaths occurred within the space of one week a few days ago.

Christensen, 67, died on Thursday, January 23, after a prolonged battle with cancer. That of Bryant occurred on Sunday, January 26. Bryant, 41, died alongside his daughter, Gianna, and seven other people, in a helicopter crash in the United States. They were going to attend a basketball game that Gianna was supposed to be part of.

Bryant himself was a basketball legend who played in the NBA for two decades with various outstanding records. As a sportsman, he mastered his craft and successfully built a personal brand. This made many people globally see him as a beacon of hope and inspiration. After his retirement in 2016, Bryant ventured into business and later started a venture capital firm with his friend, Jeff Stibel.

For Christensen, think of an academic and businessman who had a huge cult following ranging from scholars, startup founders, CEOs, corporate executives, and students. In 1997, Christensen published a book, Innovator’s Dilemma, which earned him different awards and global recognition.

One of the theories the Harvard professor espoused in the book is disruptive innovation. According to the theory, smaller companies with fewer resources can pose a threat to incumbent companies when they target overlooked segments( and markets) and deliver products at a lower price and suitable functionality. I recommend you do more study.

Bryant and Christensen were heroes to many people because of their enormous contribution and sacrifice. That adoration is likely going to continue after their death.

Cheers,

Team StartupLagos
