The Big Story

Good day ,

Most people tend to slow down when they retire or get to a certain age. But that is not Les Cullen, founder of a South Africa-based hearing aid company. At 76, Cullen recently launched his first startup after retiring from a telecom company.

Last week Monday, Strive Masiyiwa, founder and chairman of Econet Wireless, shared the story on his Facebook page. Cullen is a former employee of Liquid telecom (a subsidiary of Econet Wireless) before he retired.

According to Masiyiwa, Cullen left the company some years ago when he was suffering from a hearing problem. He decided to devote his retirement to finding a solution to the problem for himself and other people.

Although he had no previous knowledge about how to make Hearing Aids. The audacious move for him was resorting to the internet for information and research. At last, he came up with a product and now has 800 customers across the world while still operating the
business out of his home.

Entrepreneurs are problem-solvers who advance societal progress; they see things differently and defy the odds that limit others.Practically, this extraordinary senior citizen has demonstrated these attributes to inspire many of us.

At that old age, nobody would dare to question him if he had given excuses and chosen to stay with the problem the rest of his life. Rather, he believed he could proffer a solution to a personal challenge and also help others suffering the same fate. And he achieved his goal in a profound way by starting hearingdevices.org

Here is an entrepreneurial hero whose action offers significant lessons to all of us!

Cheers,
